Ex-Formula 1 team boss Eddie Jordan has launched a scathing critique against former FIA F1 race director Niels Wittich, alleging deliberate red flag timing during the Brazilian Grand Prix to hinder Max Verstappen. Jordan’s fiery comments have reignited debates about fairness and transparency in the sport.
A Decisive Turn in Verstappen’s Championship Quest
The 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix became a pivotal moment in the F1 Drivers’ Championship. Despite starting from P17 due to qualifying setbacks and a grid penalty for a new ICE, Max Verstappen delivered a masterful performance in challenging, rain-soaked conditions. His victory by a 19.5-second margin over Esteban Ocon extended his lead over Lando Norris to 62 points, effectively sealing his fourth consecutive World Championship.
However, the qualifying session on Sunday morning was marred by chaos. Torrential rain led to multiple red flags, with one notably impacting Verstappen’s chances. This incident became the focal point of Jordan’s criticism.
Verstappen Wasn't Treated Fairly
Speaking on the Formula For Success podcast alongside 13-time race winner David Coulthard, Jordan accused Wittich of knowingly influencing the race outcome.
“Are you telling me that Max was dealt a fair deal? Was he dealt a fair deal when the red flag came out six cars, seven cars later?” Jordan questioned. “The red flag was wrong! It was a mistake! He f*** up, didn’t he!**”
Debate Over FIA’s Role in Championship Drama
Coulthard initially suggested that the FIA does not intentionally favor drivers, stating, “We have to assume that the race director never looks at things like where cars are as to whether…” However, Jordan interjected, adamantly claiming otherwise.
“Of course he does! Of course he does!” Jordan exclaimed. “You know the gods are in Lando’s hands. They want Lando to win this Championship. But he’s not going to, because Max has outfoxed him. That’s it.”
Jordan’s remarks have sparked questions about the role of FIA officials in shaping race outcomes and whether transparency measures need to be strengthened.
Max Verstappen’s Resilience Shines Amid Controversy
Despite the controversy, Verstappen showcased his racing prowess. After starting from P17, the Dutchman surged through the field to claim victory, proving his dominance once again. His performance underlined why he is regarded as one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history.
The FIA Under Scrutiny
Jordan’s allegations have placed the FIA under the spotlight, with many fans and experts demanding clarity on how such decisions are made. As the Drivers’ Championship edges closer to its conclusion, the focus on officiating is unlikely to wane.
